I’m back from my very first Outdoor Learning Conference in beautiful Banff, Alberta — and what an unforgettable experience it was! Hosted by Take Me Outside and the Outdoor Learning School and Store, the event brought together passionate educators, inspiring speakers, and breathtaking landscapes for a few days of deep connection, collaboration, and learning.

I had the unique opportunity to attend in a dual role — proudly representing both Project WET Canada and my own organization, Pine & Ponder Outdoors. Working the Project WET booth was a highlight in itself! I loved connecting with educators from across the country, many of whom were discovering Project WET for the first time. It was energizing to see so much interest in water education and outdoor learning, and to introduce people to the possibilities these resources offer.

On Friday, I co-facilitated a Foundations and Water in Earth Systems workshop, and we had an incredible turnout. We dove into hands-on activities, sparked curiosity, shared knowledge, and had a lot of laughs along the way. There’s something truly powerful about learning together in community — especially when water is the theme!
Saturday morning was especially exciting for me, as I led an Introduction to Nature Journaling workshop. Nearly 20 educators from across Canada joined me to explore how nature journaling can serve as a meaningful, cross-curricular tool. We began with a guided nature journaling session to introduce the practice, then broke into small groups to explore examples and brainstorm how journaling can be integrated across subject areas. I had the chance to circulate, engage in rich conversations, and hear incredible ideas from diverse teaching contexts. We wrapped up with a group discussion, where even more ideas and questions surfaced. It was such a joyful and affirming experience — and one I hope to build on in future sessions!

Beyond the workshops, there were countless other highlights: standing among the stunning mountain ranges, meeting colleagues in person for the first time after connecting online, and forming so many new and meaningful relationships. The keynote speakers were phenomenal, and every session I attended was packed with insight and inspiration.
But perhaps what stood out the most was the overall atmosphere. I’m not sure if it was because many people came on their own or in smaller groups, but I’ve never experienced a conference where people were so open to connection. There was a true sense of community — supportive, collaborative, and full of heart.

A huge thank you to everyone who made this conference so memorable. I left Banff feeling grounded, grateful, and excited for what’s to come in the world of outdoor learning.
Until next time,
Billie Jo
